Our Vision is to be the Running and Triathlon Club delivering the best training and social community to grow individuals with pride.

We are passionate about getting more people swimming, cycling and running.

The Bondi Running and Triathlon Club is the ideal place to start your athletic challenge, learn new skills and forge lasting friendships. We cater for all athletic abilities for both triathletes and runners alike.

The Club

The BRAT Club is for members of all ages and abilities, with almost equal numbers of men and women. There are training options that suit recreational athletes through to elite performers. Almost half of our members live and train locally in Bondi and the surrounding suburbs. The BRAT Club is also made up of many athletes from across the world, making The BRAT Club one of the most dynamic and exciting clubs.

Of course, it is not all about training. We hold regular social events to meet your fellow members as well as our famous annual fancy dress party.

Our History

BRATs has a colourful history and strong ties with Bondi. An informal group of runners used to head out from the Bondi Diggers Club three times a week throughout the early seventies. These runners were amongst competitors in the first City to Surf in 1971.

By the late seventies, the group had grown considerably to include a number of regular and competitive racers. This group of runners was only officially formed as the Bondi Diggers Road Runners Club in 1985. The Club severed formal ties with the Diggers in 1988, establishing itself as The Bondi Running and Triathlon (B.R.A.T.) Club Inc. after welcoming a band of triathletes into the club.

The BRAT Club is proud to honour the following life members who have served the club throughout its history

Cedric Sidebottom (deceased 21/02/2003)
Jock Cavanagh,
Brian Hardaker, Ken Wylie, Jeannie King, Tony Golden, Teresa Rider, Sam Vella, Spot Anderson, Jon Pratlett, Jenny McKenna, Ian Depree, John Hill

Cedrid Sidebottom (Cedo) was one of the original runners of the Bondi Diggers Club. Over the years he coached and mentored many runners with the aim of competing in a marathon. Cedric was often seen to be leading his band of merry runners on the different courses around the Bondi and Eastern Suburbs areas.

Cedrid Sidebottom (Cedo)

In 1985, Cedric felt he had achieved all he could have in his own running career, and so to give others a chance he decided to resurrect the Old Bondi Diggers Running Club, which had died from lack of interest sometime earlier. Cedric’s idea was to run it with regular handicap races.

So he tee’d up a meeting with the Diggers Club president, and before long the running club was established and under-way. Jock Kavanagh the first club president, and Cedric the ever diligent secretary and event organiser. Cedric was determined to make the new club work. In one of the first club newsletters he wrote ‘This club is going places, and I don’t mean just up Vaucluse Hill’….

He would organise club races by getting down to the start early, marking out the course, setting up the drink stands, coming back to chalk in the entrants’, work out handicaps, do the timing and compile the results and produce a club newsletter.

Slowly the number of competitors grew, as the word spread that this was a well-organised club. Triathlon was a new sport, so the club decided to organise one, and held it’s first Triathlon at Neilsen Park. It was a huge success. The turning point for the club came when the “Tama Try’s” a small triathlon group, who had some very talented triathletes but little in the way of organization, came across.

By this time the club had people like our very own Tony Golden and John Hill on the scene not to mention “Spot” Anderson, “Chipmunk” Fraser, Geoff Scott and Anthony McKeon, some of the best triathletes in the country and it was from these humble beginnings that the BRAT club was born.

Sadly, Cedric died of a “brain tumour” in 2003, he was 62 years old. At Cedric’s funeral, Jock Kavanagh said this in his Eulogy;

“I’ll conclude by saying something that came to my mind only the other day. You may be lucky if you can meet in your lifetime a handful of people you can say are beyond reproach, Cedric was certainly one of those, he was almost saint like in the way he led his life, material things didn’t interest him at all, he was always helping people out in an unobtrusive way. I’m sure I speak for everyone in this church today by saying, that our lives have been enriched by our association with him, he will be sadly missed.”

Cedric Sidebottom was a founding father of the BRATS through the 80’s and 90’s. Serving for 18 years as the club secretary where, he believed he could get more done for the members. He was at every race and every training session with iceboxes of soft drinks and encouragement for everyone.

In Cedric's honour, we hold the annual 'Cedo Run' on the first Saturday in February, from 2pm at Queen's Park. We encourage all members past and present to come along and share in the fun run and stories.

Joanna Kyriazakos of Mermaid Swim Academy

0437 374 715 | mermaid@mermaidswim.com.au

Joanna Kyriazakos is the founder of Mermaid Swim Academy being the first professional swim school the Icebergs has seen, now running for 11 years.

"There hasn’t been a single person that I haven’t managed to teach to swim – I’m not bragging when I say this… it’s actually got to do with the correct breathing techniques and manner in which I teach people to swim (and of course that little ingredient of an individual’s discipline to practice!) Then there’s the other spectrum of athletes who I’ve had my hand in developing their triathlon career… they have turned up aspiring for World Championships and even going to the Olympics – but we all have to start somewhere! Ultimately though my true love is indeed the ocean, so I hope that once our swimmers can swim well enough to enter the open water, they can join in frolicking amongst the waves that's home to all mer-maids and mer-men alike!

Racing

Club Races

On the 4th Sunday of every month, BRATs hold Club Races. During Summer we have a Triathlon series (swim, bike, run) and during Winter we have a Duathlon series (run, bike, run). These events are family friendly, a great chance to meet other members, and always provide fun competitive rivalry with lots of laughs. We have recently purchased an automatic timing system and are moving to online registration.

Fully sanctioned by Triathlon NSW and held on a traffic free course, races are held at Heffron Park, on Fitzgerald Avenue in Maroubra. Meet at 10am for a 10.30am start. There is the option of a sprint race or a junior’s race. For more details and to enter, check the BRAT Calendar

As a member of BRATs, you will receive discounted race entry of $20. Non members are also welcome to join us; race entry is $40 for non members. Should you wish to pre purchase a season race pass, further discounts apply. See the info for a season pass in the Online shop

Cedo Run

Cedric Sidebottom (Cedo) was a founding father of our BRAT club and we hold an annual run in his honour to celebrate the contributions he made to our wonderful club. A chance for all BRATs both old and new to come together and have a fun run and exchange stories over a few drinks and a sausage sizzle. The Cedo Run is held on the first Saturday in February, from 2pm at Queens Park.

For more information on Cedo and the history of the BRAT Club, see the history section above.

Club Champs

The NSW Club Championships, held in Forster every year around March/April, are renowned as a weekend of fierce racing and even fiercer partying. This is a weekend where all triathlon clubs in NSW go head to head and individuals earn points towards their club, rather than an individual result. This is one of BRATs main events every year and a chance for a fun weekend away with team mates. Held at the end of the racing season, Triathlon Australia puts on an official after party and presentation, where the real champions are decided on the dance floor.

More information on Club Champs will be released closer to the time.

Socialising

The BRAT Club is a great place to meet others who share a passion for fitness, coffee and a party every now and then! Many friendships, and even marriages, have been formed within our great club and we are proud of our diverse membership base spanning all ages and nationalities.

Social activities are built into most of the sessions on the training calendar. There is the opportunity for coffee catch ups after all our cycle sessions and after Thursday night track you're welcome to join the group for a recovery steak.

Monthly Social

BRATs hold a monthly social on the 4th Sunday of every month. This is a great opportunity to leave the lycra at home and relax with a few drinks with your training buddies. The location roams between various pubs in the Eastern Suburbs. Keep your eyes on the BRAT calendar for full details.

Pizza night for new members

In partnership with one of our sponsors The Running Company Bondi Beach, BRATs hold a pizza night for new members on the second Wednesday of every month. Join us at the shop at 6.30pm for a social run, followed by a chat and some free pizza and beer. Members of the committee will be there for new members to meet and ask questions.

City 2 Surf

BRATs have been running the City 2 Surf since its inception and there is always a big celebration on our home turf, the Bondi Diggers Club, at the end of the race.

Annual Party

We hold an official club party once a year which is a chance for our members to let their hair down and celebrate after all the training and racing. Sometimes involving dress ups, a formal presentation, or a band, the theme of the party changes every year.
